Ingnoring golf fitness training could eventually take a toll on your body. Golf is not that the most demanding of sports, but it still can cause injury and fatigue. Many golfer’s who do not take fitness training and warm up seriously can end up with lower back, shoulder, wrist, and elbow (golfer’s elbow) injuries. This is one reason why golf fitness training is very important!

Besides avoiding injury golf fitness training also helps to increase your accuracy and swing power. This will allow you to hit the ball farther and more accurate, eventually leading to a drop in your handicap. Improving your golf game is not the only thing golf fitness training will help, it will also improve your own physical fitness. Your endurance will also increase as you will be able to walk the entire 18 holes or more without getting tired. Also with an increase in your physical fitness you will start to notice a decrease in belly fat and increase in muscle mass. There are so many advantages to golf fitness training and best part is you don’t have to spend hours everyday in the gym for it to work!

There are three main components of golf fitness training that need to be address:

• Flexibility
• Strength
• Balance

Flexibility – Golf Fitness Training

It is important in golf to have good flexibility. The golf swing, the main component of your golf game, requires a large range of motion in order to execute the proper golf swing. If your joints or muscles are inflexible it restricts that range of motion, causing you to compensate within certain areas of your swing. This compensation can causes bad habits in your swing leading to undesirable ball flight and shorter club distance.

Stops To Improving Your Flexiblity

• Take 15-20 minutes out of your day for the proper lower back, shoulder and hamstring flexibility exercises
• Exercises should be completed 3 or 4 times during the week.
• After exercises are complete take a couple practice swings with your golf club focusing majorly on proper swing technique

A good lower back flexiblity exercise is the standing forward bend.

• Stand up tall with your feet hip distance apart or wider, knees slightly bent
• Slowly bend forward between your legs at your hips until you feel a stretch in your lower back and hamstrings
• If you can touch the floor crawl your hands back underneath your legs you should feel more of a stretch
• Hold that position for 20 seconds
• Repeat this exercise for at least 2 min, you should be able to find that you can reach farther every time!

A new form of flexibility training is pilates golf. Pilates golf helps improve your swing range of motion, taking basic pilates techniques and aiming them toward golf specific drills. Pilates Golf can improve your swing accuracy and distance among many other things.

Golf Fitness Training -Strength

The main advantage of golf strength training is that it will give you more power in your shots. You will notice after you having been training for golf your club distances will increase. Besides power you will also see that your accuracy for each shot is better. By strength training you are strengthening your core golf muscles allowing you to hit the correct swing postions throughout your entire swing.

Golf Fitness Training – Balance

Balance is the last important aspect of golf fitness training. Your balance helps to control your body movement throughout your swing. A common occurance among beginner golfers when they try to swing to hard at the ball is lose of balance, causing undesirable ball flight or even missing the ball. It is very important that golfers do not swing outside of their physical capabilities; although if you improve your overall balance you will be able to swing controlably harder. Maintaining your balance throughout your swing allows for more swing control and accuracy.

How to Improve Your Swing Balance:

• Take 10-25 minutes for balance exercises
• Complete exercises at least 3 times a week

• Hit a couple balls then switch legs
• Complete this exercise 3 times alternating legs

Golf fitness training will allow you to improve your golf game on many different levels. After awhile if you focus fully on all three areas of golf training, strength, balance and flexibilty, you will be able to increase your power, accuracy and endurance.
