Golf is a game of determination and precision. Improving your golf game can seem almost impossible at times, but there is one easy way to drop strokes off your score with very little time investment. That step is learning how to become better at hitting hybrid irons.

Hybrids are often misunderstood. The goal of hitting a hybrid is not to get as much distance as possible, but to replace your 2, 3, or 4 iron. If you hit your hybrid a lot farther then your normal irons it will create a gap in yardages that is hard to fill. The hybrid is much easier to hit than a normal long iron but should still fly the same distance as your regular shot.

Here are a few things you can do to make sure you are striking the kinds of shots you need.

Play the ball in the proper position when hitting a hybrid. Too many golfers play the ball too far foward in their stance. This leads to a lot of thin golf shots. The clubhead will contact the ball around the equator or even worse above it. This leads to topped and thin shots. The optimum placement is to put the ball about 2 inches inside of your forward foot. This will promote a descending blow when you hit the ball. That descending strike will cause the ball to react in the opposite direction which will utilize the loft of the club and send the ball on a nice trajectory towards your target. Let the natural loft of the clubhead get the ball in the air. If you don’t you’ll have a tendency to flip your hands through impact, causing more thin shots.

If you place the ball too far back in your stance you’ll probably end up hitting fat or chunked shots. Because the ball is not in the proper position you have to try to manipulate the club with your arms and hands in an unnatural way. Often times it means you end up throwing your hands at the back of the ball and the clubhead lags behind and doesn’t impact the ball in the proper position. This fat shot will hardly get out of your own shadow.

If you find that you are having any of these issues it would be good to go to the practice range and find your optimum ball placement. Try hitting shots intentionally in the wrong position. Try it too far forwards and backwards. Keep experimenting until you find the perfect position that yields the type of shot you have been looking for. You’ll be happy with the results and your golf game will improve with these free golf tip, and just a few changes to your setup.
